Why I love capitalism
Wednesday, April 4th, 2007A proposed amendment to ban same sex marriages in Indiana died on the State House committee room floor yesterday. The 5-5 vote split down party lines. The democrats, although supporting the spirit of the man-woman marriage language, disagreed with a vauge second clause that might have curtailed the rights of straight people. The outcome is good, although the House members are still intolerant and disconnected.
What I really found interested in the article (Indianapolis Star) is that major businesses in Indiana like Eli Lilly opposed this amendment because it would make it harder for them to recruit talent. They understand that a tolerant and open atmosphere is necessary for creativity and innovation to flourish. Businesses know that intolerance and prosperity are not compatible.
In order for capitalism to work, information must be free to flow between entities in the market. Measures that restrict information flow by discouraging individuals from entering the market (as gay people would be discouraged from coming to Indiana) reduces the amount of information processing that can occur. Innovation is stifled in this scenario.
When will this country come to accept that tolerance and dialogue are in our best interested? Not closed-minded dogma that’s driven by the fallacy of tradition?
